Freedom Paws Canada

The Courtnall Society for Mental Health is thrilled to support Freedom Paws Canada as one of our 2024 Grant Recipients. This innovative organization is transforming the lives of individuals facing physical, psychological, and emotional challenges by training service dogs to meet their specific needs. Through their Operation Freedom Paws Canada program, they are not only assisting veterans, first responders, RCMP, and individuals with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and complex traumas but are also expanding their reach to support people living with medical alert diabetes, neurological conditions, and mobility challenges. Freedom Paws Canada’s unique approach revolves around training individuals to train their own service dogs. This process not only creates highly skilled and responsive dogs but also helps the individual build a deep bond with their companion, empowering them to live more independently and confidently. This therapeutic process is especially beneficial for individuals suffering from PTSD and other complex traumas, as it fosters healing through companionship, structure, and responsibility.

In the past 18 months, Freedom Paws Canada has expanded its program to include children and youth, recognizing that young individuals can benefit immensely from the support of a service dog. Whether helping a child navigate social situations or offering therapeutic companionship to a teenager struggling with anxiety or trauma, these service dogs provide a source of comfort and empowerment. Freedom Paws serves a wide region, including Vancouver Island, Victoria, and parts of Alberta. Their impact spans across communities, providing individuals with the tools and support they need to lead fulfilling, independent lives.

The Courtnall Society for Mental Health is proud to support Freedom Paws Canada in their mission to improve the lives of veterans, first responders, individuals with PTSD, and others facing physical and psychological challenges. The companionship and support offered by a service dog can be transformative, and we are excited to help extend this opportunity to more individuals in need.
